City Folk

In the weeks leading up to its release, I wasn’t feeling too excited about the game.  But then last weekend I started reading up more about it and felt that rush come back.  That rush I hadn’t felt for the last five months or so since I stopped playing the Wild World.  That rush for…fishing and picking up seashells!

I ended up getting the game Monday night after work and now have put more time in the game this week than I have at the office.  The familiar and instantly-pleasing things far outweigh the minor quibbles I have with it.  But this wasn’t going to be worth a post until I found out that the game lets you take pictures, and then accidentally found out that it’s enabled right from the get-go (no rare item or mid-game acquisition needed).  And not only that, but the pictures aren’t encrypted like those from most games with snapshot features, so no hoop-jumping is necessary to see them on a computer.

So some random photos and thoughts:

I am most excited to see what new endearing dialogue the neighbors have to say.  So far it seems like they start repeating things if you talk to them more than a few times in a short time frame.

I do that little guy head nod in real life!

In Wild World I would catch bees by running far away up and then going into my inventory to equip my net.  The bees would reach you and swirl around you, but not sting you while your inventory was open.  So through trial and error I was eventually able to figure out where the bees had to be for you to exit inventory and mash the A button to be able to catch them.  In City Folk, I was trying to do this at 3 or 4 AM, and it appears as though the bees don’t advance on you while the inventory is open.  However that doesn’t make sense to me since everything else continues moving around you while you’re looking at your inventory, so I’ll have to double-check.

You could use a Mii as your face, but you cannot wear 3D glasses and a grandpa hat with it (no headgear/accessories).  Lame!  I do know now not to sell my Nook shirt since you can’t buy it from your catalog.

Close enough to FOR SERIOUS.  Also I thought Bluebear was a guy until she was referenced by a neighbor today.

Melba (koala) was the first neighbor from Joetopia (Wild World town) that I saw in this game, in the city.  Friga is probably one of my two favorite neighbors of all time (the other being Big Top) but she gets the nod because she went from Marie’s town (where I was a resident) to Kei’s town and then my town.

Drake was another guy from my DS town I had from the start.

Action pose?

I forgot how exciting all these little landmark events were when starting Wild World.  The thrill of seeing things/catching fish and bugs/identifying fossils for the first time was pretty much forgotten when I stopped playing Wild World.  At first I was kind of miffed that the porting of my DS character only brought over most of your item catalog, I’ve greatly enjoyed the new flavor text that occurs when catching bugs/fish.  Next week though I’ll be sick of seeing crucian carp.

Hey Joe…this is Nathan, Kei and Mordecai’s friend from Grinnell. I also got Animal Crossing! It is sweet. I hope this is not too forward, but want to swap friend codes? Send me an email! I am too paranoid to post my town info publicly..

Keep up the good blogging work…N
