(in search of) A Beautiful Bun

Last Monday I had a craving for McDonald’s chocolate chip cookies, which I’ve grown quite fond of the last few weeks or so. While pulling up at the drive-thru menu, I noticed new chicken products being offered, the chicken biscuit and this:

Despite the dubious image on the box, I was greatly pleased to find that it had the plain bun like the Filet-O-Fish. I was even more greatly pleased to find that the bun was in pristine condition. Unfortunately I was eager to enjoy the sandwich and didn’t think to photograph it for posterity’s sake (above picture actually taken at a later date). Sharing the bun’s qualities, the sandwich is pretty plain; the only thing inside besides the chicken is a few pickles. Still I think it’s the best-tasting McDonald’s chicken sandwich since the McChicken pre-Dollar Menu days. I would probably put this on par with the Chicken Tendercrisp from Burger King, my choice between the two probably being determined by the greater of my desire for McDonald’s Coke or BK onion rings on that day.

The next day I decided I wanted to take a picture of the sandwich in all of its perfect-bun glory.

This was probably the worst plain bun I’d ever had from McDonald’s.

Wednesday I was off, and I generally only grab McDonald’s on my way home from work, so no attempt was made.
To make up for that, on Thursday I bought two:

Still no luck.

Friday’s offering:

No idea what that mark could be from.

No work/McDonald’s for me on the weekend, so Monday was my next trip there:

I’m actually intrigued by these wrinkles now. Is there a deeper meaning hidden within?

And then on Tuesday:

This’ll do quite nicely. However, closer inspection from another angle revealed this:

It kind of reminds me of the hamburger mascot that accompanied Hamburglar, Fryguys, and Grimace. Weren’t pop cups also represented? As it is, I’m kind of sick of the sandwich for now. One final thing I noticed about the packaging:

The spelling of ’savour.’ Is this supposed to be Southern-England Style chicken? I’m not sure what about the sandwich is supposed to make it southern style.

Is the chicken biscuit a part of the morning menu?

  2. admin says:

    yeah it is
havent had a chance to try it yet myself
i forget if it was mcdonalds or whataburger that had a honey chicken biscuit when i visited relatives in austin a couple of years back, probably the latter

I was actually really surprised because purchasing the sandwich alone is pretty expensive ($2.89 in Hyde Park). So I was quite ready to break my New Years resolution of no McDonald’s for the year. Is this a limited time only thing?

    no mcdonalds for the year?

    i weep for your belly
enjoy your hot dogs wrapped in white bread

seriously though that and your budget experiment are quite noble

i think the sandwich by itself is $2.89 by me as well
i havent seen any commercials for it so i dont know if its only for a limited time or not but i would guess itd be a permanent addition
i thought the sweet tea disappeared with the $1 nuggets a few months back but it turns out my mcdonalds always had it, for some reason its just not on the drive thru menu, only on the scrolling electric display

despite its plain nature i think the ssc a really really good sandwich
easily the highest quality chicken from mcdonalds ive had in years, for what its worth

however i dont want to be the reason that you broke your new years resolution
especially if you end up not thinking it was worth it

i never thought highly of the deluxe sandwiches or now the premium crispy/grilled ones
mainly because of my displeasure with fancy buns

having said that though i did briefly go through a grilled chicken phase and a southwest salad (crispy) phase

yeah i have to admit, i havent been impressed by mcdonald’s deluxe sandwiches. but i really do want to try the ssc sandwich. just said no to mcdonalds for a year, just cuz i needed somethign to say no to for a year. but im sure ill have the chicken sandwich soon.

im not sure if its limited time or not. but to make sure i try ti at least once. im going to try it for sure tomorrow.

    that’s a lot of sandwiches

yo apparently the deluxe ranch crispy chicken has like the most calories among all of the burgers, probably with the exception of the triple bacon cheeseburger (god i wish they would bring that back). not that i count calories, but with the lack of taste, the deluxe sandwiches are just a lose-lose

every time i see this i want to go to mcdonalds. still the same ol? on lunt?

how bout that white castle on hollywoodish, will i see you there?

  7. admin says:

yeah that mcdonalds is still my stomping grounds
although ive only set foot in there once since its remodel, just to check out the interior
the drivethru is prolly my dinner destination about twice a week after work, also i may grab breakfast from there if i have an early day

white castle for me is only a latenight/weekend/post-drinking thing
although latenight by myself id rank steaknshake above that
and weekend/post-drinking well usually end up at deluxe on clark/devon
the last time i ate inside that white castle though, nar had a bad mosquito experience, so now its strictly a drivethru affair
also i just stopped by there two nights ago and was appalled to learn that they no longer carry grape pop (or maybe its still on the inside machine, just not for the drivethru customers)

i haven’t been to deluxe in so long, their wings and cheese bricks are amazing. are they still good?

  9. admin says:

hmm cant say ive ever tried those
im not really much of a wing guy
i hate getting my hands saucy/dirty when eating

not sure what i had the first time i went to deluxe
but one of melanies friends put me up on the skillets, and i tried the meat lovers on his recommendation
shorlty after that i shifted over to the hash with no onions, and thats what ive been rolling with since
